The launch of Soyuz TMA-21 was devoted to the 50th anniversary of the first manned space mission, which was conducted by Yuri Gagarin on April 12, 1961.

Soyuz TMA-21 launched from Baikonur Cosmodrome’s Gagarin’s Start launch pad on April 4th, 2011. It transported three members of the Expedition 27 crew to the International Space Station (ISS). The Expedition 27 crew included RKA cosmonauts Aleksandr Samokutyayev and Andrei Borisenko and NASA astronaut Ronald John Garan Jr.

 

TMA-21 is the 109th flight of a Soyuz spacecraft, the first of which launched in 1967

 

The rocket bears the name and likeness of Yuri Gagarin with the following inscription:  "Поехали!" (Poyekhali!Let's go!). The rocket also includes emblems of ROSKOSMOS and ENERGIA. From the top you can read in red letters: " 50th Anniversary to Gagarin’s flight”.
